Imani Mental Health and Wellness

About

Mission and Treatment Approach

I believe in the importance of personalized mental health treatment that addresses the biological, emotional, environmental, and spiritual aspects of mental health and wellness. My treatment approach is to use a combination of medications, therapy, and education to interrupt acute episodes of illness and to break the cycle of recurrence with a holistic approach that includes guidance on diet, exercise and other lifestyle choices.

Dr. Susan Mbugua, DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC is a board-certified Family  Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC). Susan initially received her Associate of Applied Science in Nursing from Mt. Wachusett Community College, Gardner, MA in 2006 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2008 from Framingham State University. Driven by the lack of psychiatric services and access to mental health care, Susan pursued a career as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, graduating from University of Texas- Arlington with a Master of Science in Nursing in 2014. In 2022, Dr. Mbugua was awarded her Doctoral degree in Nursing from Wilmington University. Her dissertation focus was on Evaluating the Effectiveness of Mindfulness Meditation on loneliness in a Geriatric setting.  In her practice today, Susan emphasizes respectful, compassionate, and timely mental health care and has made it her mission to provide timely, quality mental health care access to those that have made the decision to seek help.

Growing up , I saw the devastating effects of lack of access to  mental health care in the community. I felt I had to serve in the medical field to make a difference and give back to the community. Prior to transitioning to mental health, I worked in various settings as a Registered Nurse including cardiac critical care, surgery, rehabilitation, alcohol /drug treatment and Emergency room. Prior to opening this practice, I  have also worked at an adult geriatric outpatient clinic for a large hospital system. I also have extensive experience having worked at one of the busiest community mental health clinics in Dallas, Texas where I worked with acute, chronic and patients with severe mental illness disorders. I specialize in working with adults and Geriatrics who deal with Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia, ADD, Bipolar, PTSD and Psychotic  disorders.

My love, compassion and empathy for patients with  Mental health concerns drives my day to day practice.
